Description
The Student Counsellor & Wellbeing Officer will combine confidential, ethical and student-centred counselling with proactive campus-wide wellbeing programming. The role will provide early support and appropriate referral while also coordinating awareness, prevention, committee work and institutional initiatives that strengthen student wellbeing.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide individual counselling and wellbeing support within the counsellor's professional competence and the University's approved scope of service.
- Conduct intake and initial assessments, agree appropriate support plans and maintain professional boundaries.
- Identify and assess risks involving self-harm, suicide, abuse, violence or other emergencies and activate the approved crisis and safeguarding procedures.
- Refer students to external mental-health, medical or specialised services when clinical needs exceed the University's available support.
- Explain informed consent and the limits of confidentiality and maintain secure, access-controlled counselling records.
- Develop and implement a semester-wise student wellbeing plan informed by student needs, service data and emerging campus concerns.
- Plan and organise an annual Wellbeing Week together with regular awareness sessions, workshops, campaigns and preventive activities.
- Serve as the focal person and Secretary to the Campus Wellbeing Committee, including agendas, minutes, action tracking and follow-up, without disclosing identifiable counselling information.
- Conduct periodic wellbeing needs assessments or surveys and recommend evidence-based institutional responses.
- Guide faculty and staff on recognising concerns and making appropriate referrals without disclosing confidential student information.
- Coordinate appropriately designed peer-awareness or wellbeing-ambassador activities.
- Maintain anonymised service data and prepare periodic reports on utilisation, themes, referrals and preventive activities.
- Support the development of wellbeing, safeguarding, crisis-response and referral procedures and maintain an updated external referral directory.
- Participate in appropriate professional supervision, case review and continuing professional development.
Requirement
- Master's degree in Clinical Psychology, Counselling Psychology or Applied Psychology, supported by supervised counselling or clinical training.
- At least two years of relevant post-qualification experience in counselling, mental-health support or student wellbeing; experience in an educational institution will be preferred.
- Knowledge of counselling ethics, informed consent, confidentiality, risk assessment, crisis response, safeguarding and referral practices.
- Formal training in crisis intervention, suicide-risk assessment, psychological first aid or mental-health first aid will be an advantage.
- Strong counselling, active-listening, assessment, communication, documentation and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to handle sensitive matters with empathy, professional judgement, clear boundaries and strict confidentiality.
- Ability to coordinate appropriately with students, relevant University personnel, parents or external professionals, subject to consent, confidentiality and safeguarding requirements.
- Relevant professional registration or membership, where applicable, will be an advantage.
